Story/History:[]
In the far reaches of the world lies the mysterious realm of the dead. Populated by the greatest heroes and villains of legend, along with the most fearsome creatures to wander the world, only the bravest adventurers dare venture into this dark realm of the dead.
Shoes samples from the Aenid (Homer's Story of the Trojan War), providing a rich tapestry of interwoven storytelling.
Characters from the Aeneid[]
In Book 3, which tells of the Trojans' wanderings after The Fall of Troy, Palinuras (spelled Palinouras in the Underworld Zone) is singled out as an experienced navigator. In Book 5, when the Trojans have left Carthage, he advises Aeneas to forestall sailing to Italy and to wait out a terrible storm on Sicily, where they hold the funeral games honoring Aeneas's father, Anchises. After they leave Sicily for Italy, Palinurus, at the helm of Aeneas's ship and leading the fleet, is singled out by Virgil in second person when it becomes clear that he is the one whom the gods will sacrifice to guarantee safe passage to Italy for the Trojans: unum pro multis dabitur caput, "one single life shall be offered to save many." Drugged by the god of sleep, he falls overboard; Aeneas takes over the helm and, unaware of the gods' influence, accuses Palinurus of complacency: "You, Palinurus, placed too much trust in the sky and the ocean's / Calm. You'll lie naked and dead on the sands of an unknown seashore."
Aeneas next encounters Palinurus in the underworld, before he crosses Cocytus (which the ghosts of the unburied dead cannot cross into the underworld proper), where he asks how it came to be that he died despite a prophecy from Apollo, that he would reach Italy unscathed. Palinurus responds that he survived the plunge into the sea and washed ashore after four days near Velia, and was killed there and left unburied. The Cumaean Sibyl, who has guided Aeneas into the underworld, predicts that locals will come and build him a mound; the place will be named Cape Palinuro in his honor.

General Zone Strategies:[]
To enter the area, bury the corpse of Misenus and take the golden bough to open the Jaws of Aornos, the Gates of the Underworld. In the upper area, watch the DT east, Lair of Death. War and Discord are aggro! The Furies are aggro! and !calm. Blind them instead. Drudgery is not glowing, but is resist phys. It has a ton of HP and though is worth around 10K 0 remort XP, is worth about 200K in melee XP if you ANNIH, more for 2XANNIH warriors. Evil Pleasures are not aggro.
In the center of the cavern, a giant elm tree beckons. Use the command:
> cling tree
to descend to the subterranean Greek Mythology level. Rooms radiate in all directions from the roots of the elm tree, and some of the rooms are aggro! (Medusa, Hydra, Geyron, Scylla, Harpies). Medusa's room and the Harpy's room are calmable. Medusa is the toughest of these mobs as she employs a wide variety of mage procs.
Any of the mobs in the sub-level can load the monstrous key to the rest of the area, (Acheron and Dis), accessible through a gate directly north of the elm tree in the center of the upper cavern.
Use the command:
> climb roots
to leave the subterranean area.
Once you've used the monstrous key to open the gate to Acheron (between Fear and Poverty in the Main Cavern), find Charon and have your group leader pay him. Patiently wait as Charon paddles you across the River Styx to the Swamp of Dis. After disembarking from Charon's raft, you'll face Cerberus (immediately east), the two-headed dog, which loads the gate key to the Underworld.
Traverse the Fields of Mourning and find King Minos. Take his verdict, and open the gate to the Fields of Dis. On the way, stop by Tisiphone's Cave and see if she's loaded her whip.
